I’m Neither Here Nor There: Mexican’s Quotidian Struggles with Migration and Poverty
Patricia Zavella
2011, Duke University Press
352 pages, plates

A STUDY that explores in detail the sense of displacement felt by Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the United States is long overdue, and Patricia Zavella’s ethnographic research goes a long way towards explaining the sense of instability felt by those from the country’s southern neighbour as well as by their families in Mexico itself. She calls this “peripheral vision” and it seems highly appropriate as a way of understanding how Mexicans deal with migration – and the exploitation in the workplace and racist nativism that they so often encounter. – GO’T
