78 minutes (English and Spanish with subtitles)

LATAMROB rating: ****

THIS innovative experimental movie made entirely from photographic images stitched together with a clever storyline and seamless dialogue is something of a technical triumph which, for students of cinema at least, demonstrates how you can make a credible film with minimal equipment. Jonás Cuarón, the son of Alfonso Cuarón – one of Mexico’s leading film-maker’s – reveals the level of talent that has brought his father international acclaim with a simple love story between a Mexican teenager and an older American woman who meet one summer. The plot itself was superimposed upon and built around the images, making the role played by the dialogue – spoken, often as the thoughts of the characters, in interchanging whispers – a key device. It is highly watchable and at times intriguing – another first by Mexican cinema. – EC
