THIS excellent monograph explores the political connotations of the fiction of the Peruvian writer and anthropologist José María Arguedas, and identifies within the work of a writer influenced by Marxist ideas strains of the Andean plurinationalism found today in its most concrete form across the border in Bolivia. Irina Alexandra Feldman draws attention to the contemporary relevance for the region of this theme within the work of Arguedas but also how his prophetic ideas could not be reconciled in his day either with the politics of his native Peru or his own social position.
